While Hollywood screenwriters have ended a months-long strike, actors are still technically out of work. Which doesn’t help the studios, much less Netflix.
The platform announced the renewal of One Piece for Season 2 a few weeks ago, but filming cannot begin until the actors sign the contract.
If the actors’ strike ends too soon, the American giant will have to face another problem. In Interview with The DirectOne of the directors of the live-action One Piece said:
“Season 2 has a lot to say. It’s like Harry Potter. They need to shoot fast before the cast gets too old.”
Harry Potter syndrome
Nicole Hirsch Whittaker does raise an interesting problem. By the end of the 8 Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have become much older than their characters (at least 5-6 years older), even though they started filming at the age of 12-13. An inconsistency that for some can be erased thanks to the magic of makeup and special effects.
In the case of One Piece, the members of the Straw Hat Crew are between the ages of 17 and 20. When Inaki Godoi started playing Luffy, he was his character’s age. But it will be a few years before the first season ends and the second season begins (scheduled for 2024, if all goes well).
But this change will be especially noticeable on the youngest live actors, starting with Luffy, Sanji, Nami, Zoro and Usopp as children. Eiichiro Oda’s manga delights in exploring its characters’ pasts throughout their adventures, forcing the live-action to do the same with the help of flashbacks.
If One Piece lasts a few years, as the creators hope, they will face the same problem as Harry Potter: the cast will grow too fast.
