MetSul Meteorology warns of rainfall well above historical average in October, predicting new flooding in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina
MetSul Meteorology has issued a warning for southern Brazil, indicating that the remainder of October will feature precipitation well above the historical average. The states most affected by intense rainfall will be Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, with the possibility of above-average rainfall also in several areas of the state of Paraná. Extreme volumes are expected, with some areas of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina likely to see further accumulations of between 200mm and 400mm by the end of October, leading to further flooding.
The first week of October has already recorded exceptional rainfall, with accumulations of up to 233 mm in Erechim, 225 mm in Palmeira das Missões in Rio Grande do Sul and 265 mm in Celso Ramos and Mirim Doce in Santa Catarina. With rain already experienced and rain still expected for the rest of the month, MetSul forecasts that several cities in the northern half of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina will end October with accumulated rainfall between 300 mm and 500 mm, which in some places could reach marks between 500 mm and 600 mm.
