During the interview, participation in the 2023 BFI London Film Festivalaccording to information from Variety, Gerwig he recalled how he argued with the studio, who did not believe in the scene in question, during the film’s post-production.
“The script just said ‘and then everything becomes a dream ballet and they resolve themselves through dancing.’ There was a big meeting where it was like ‘do you need this?’ and I was like ‘everything in me needs this,'” said the filmmaker. “And they said, ‘What does that mean? What’s a dream ballet?’ And I said ‘where do I start?'”
“If people could understand this in Singing in the Rain (1952), I think we’ll be fine. I think people will understand, and that was the big reference,” he continued Greta Gerwig. “Even though everything felt right and I was happy with everything we were doing, I also had this feeling of, ‘Oh no, this could get horrible, but I’m committed now.'”
