‘It’s Like Watching Your Ex-Wife’s Home Movies’: Guillermo Del Toro Explains Why He Doesn’t Watch This Sci-Fi Work

In 2013, Guillermo del Toro presented the science fiction film Pacific Rim to the public. The story of two pilots, played by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi, who with the help of a giant robot face terrible monsters to save the world.

The blockbuster is a huge success at the box office with over $410 million worldwide and a sequel makes perfect sense.

Del Toro, who has recently given Hollywood a lot of attention, is at the helm of this Pacific Rim 2, but a behind-the-scenes big-money story is driving the filmmaker to jump ship.

“We were ready to make a sequel. It was a different film than the first one, but also a continuation of what I was trying to do.”– says the Mexican at Collider’s microphone.

“Then one of those things happened that makes me say life is crazy.”The man who almost made a Star Wars movie continues. “The producers had to be paid by 5pm to have access to the Toronto set or we’d lose them for months.

I warned them and said, “Remember, we’re going to lose sets.” 5pm came and we lost them. Then the producers said that we could shoot in China. But I didn’t want to because I wanted to go and shoot form of water.”

Due to a late payment that forced him to go and film in China, Guillermo del Toro decided not to shoot Pacific Rim 2. The director preferred to concentrate on the shape of water that moves him faster. And we can say that he had a nose, the film received four Oscars!

Sequel to Pacific Rim, the so-called Pacific Rebellion, directed by Steven S. Daynight. What did Guillermo del Toro, who remained one of the producers, think about it? Nothing at all because… he’s never seen the movie!

“I haven’t seen the Pacific Rim sequel because it’s like watching your ex-wife’s home movies”– says Del Toro. “It’s terrible if they’re good and worse if they’re bad, or vice versa.”

Actually, you don’t want to know. So I haven’t seen the movie. I read the final script, which was very different from mine. Some elements were the same, but still very different. “

Pacific Rebellion tells the story of Jake Fifty (John Boyega), a promising young pilot whose famous father sacrifices his life to save humanity from the monstrous Kaiju. The feature film, released in theaters in 2018, grossed more than $290 million worldwide.
