The European Union’s industry commissioner told businessman Elon Musk that disinformation has spread on his social media platform countermeasures in line with the new EU online content rules.
Thierry Breton said on Tuesday he had evidence that X, formerly known as Twitter, was being used to spread illegal content and disinformation in the European Union.
“I therefore call on you to urgently ensure that your systems are effective and to report the crisis measures taken to my team,” Breton told Musk in an October 10 letter seen by Reuters.
Breton did not provide details on the misinformation cited.
Responding to Breton’s post on X, Musk said his company’s policy is for everything to be open source and transparent.
“Please list the violations you allude to in X, so the public can see them,” he said in X.
Online content regulations known as the Digital Services Act (DSA) require X and other major online platforms to remove illegal content and take steps to address risks to public safety and civic discourse.
