The government’s rescue operation has already received 2,700 requests to return, with at least 25 trying to leave the Gaza Strip
The first flight of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), which brought 211 Brazilians from Israel, arrived in Brasilia at 4.07 this Wednesday 11th. Since the escalation of the conflict between the Palestinian group Hamas and Israel, on Saturday 7th, the Lula government (PT) organizes a rescue operation for Brazilians in the region. The Brazilian embassy in Tel Aviv has received at least 2,700 repatriation requests, including at least 25 to the Gaza Strip.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria da Rocha, the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, and the Commander of the Air Force, Air Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, welcomed the Brazilians.
According to Minister Múcio, by order of Lula, all Brazilians who are in conflict zones and want to return will be brought to Brazil. Múcio stressed that Brazil was the first country to repatriate its citizens.
This KC-30 aircraft left Tel Aviv at 2.12pm on Tuesday the 10th and returned directly to Brasilia. Half of the passengers had the federal capital as their final destination, the rest went to Rio de Janeiro on two FAB planes. The repatriation action coordinated by the Farnesina with the help of the Ministry of Defense focuses on the removal of Brazilians who are in Israel for tourism or work, favoring families with children, the elderly and people with disabilities.
The Brazilian withdrawal from Gaza is more complex, as Israel has closed its borders in the area. The alternative would be to leave the region towards Egypt, where there are also blockades, bombings and access difficulties. After last Saturday’s attack, Israel implemented a total blockade of Palestinians in Gaza, preventing the arrival of electricity, water, food and fuel and promoting continuous bombing.
The FAB program includes the arrival of flights to Brazil with repatriated Brazilians in the next few days. Later, at 11pm, another KC-30 should land in Galeão, Rio, while on Thursday the 12th the KC-390 aircraft, with up to 60 passengers, should arrive in Recife (PE) and continue to Guarulhos.
Two more KC-30 flights are expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro on Friday and Saturday.
Escalation of the conflict and death of Brazilians
Last Saturday, the 7th, the Hamas group, which controls Gaza, carried out the bloodiest attack against Israel in decades, launching thousands of bombs and causing the death of around 900 people. Gunmen from the group used explosives to breach barriers surrounding Gaza and kill and abduct civilians.
One of the targets of the attack was a party where at least 260 people were killed. Hundreds of Israelis, including children, women and the elderly, were taken hostage by the group. In response, Israel declared war and dropped thousands of bombs on the Gaza Strip. The overall death toll now exceeds 1,500.
Until Tuesday, Itamaraty confirmed the death of two Brazilians missing from the rave party that took place about 5 kilometers from the Gaza Strip. They are: Ranani Nidejelski Glazer, 23 years old, from Rio Grande do Sul, and Bruna Valeanu, 24 years old, from Rio.
According to Itamaraty, a Brazilian woman who was at the party is still missing. Karla Stelzer Mendes, 41, from Rio. She has Israeli citizenship and lives in the country with her 19-year-old son
Through the social network X, formerly Twitter, Lula expressed solidarity and support for the Brazilian victims.
The Brazilian Government regrets and expresses its deep regret for the death of Brazilian citizen Bruna Valeanu, 24 years old, born in Rio de Janeiro, the second victim of the attacks that occurred on October 7 in Israel.
