Ridley Scott made two prequels to one of his biggest hits, but they couldn’t match the level of the first films.
At the end of the 70s, Dan O’Bannon he wrote the screenplay for “a horror movie about a spaceship with a small group of astronauts”, as he himself described it. At first glance, this doesn’t seem particularly remarkable, but it was actually the beginning of one of the biggest and most iconic science fiction franchises of all time: the series Alien, the eighth passenger!
In season, Ridley Scott he was still a relatively unknown director, having made only one film, The Duelists. But the first Alien film changed everything for the director. Although the film wasn’t originally his idea, he made several sketches that the studio found so promising that they doubled the budget and firmly believed in a success—and so it happened.
Whether it’s the spaceship design or the monster H.R. Giger created, Alien has made its mark on the sci-fi genre like few other films, and with a box office gross of $184.7 million (on a budget of just $11 million dollars!), was a huge box office success. Therefore, it was clear that it would not just be an excursion into the vastness of space, but other parts of Alien would have to be released.
