Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama has returned to write and draw “Dragon Ball Daima,” a new animated series from Toei. Until then, the legendary manga artist was mostly dedicated to providing general guidance on narrative and character design for franchise projects.
For those in a hurry:
The announcement of Toriyama’s return came in a trailer for “Dragon Ball Daima,” released by Toei Animation this week. Watch the video below (with Japanese audio and English subtitles):
Dragon Ball Daima
Toei Animation has announced that it is well underway in the production of the new Dragon Ball. From what the trailer shows, several classic Dragon Ball Z characters – for example: Goku, Vegeta and Bulma – will be transformed into children, similar to what happened to Goku in Dragon Ball GT.
During a panel on “Dragon Ball Daima,” executive producer Akio Iyoku described Toriyama as “deeply involved beyond his usual capabilities” in the production process and suggested that he “plan completely new episodes for the plot.”
While Toei hasn’t shared many details about the new Dragon Ball, the new trailer suggests that the anime may follow a metalanguage approach. This is because the villain seems to be aware of Goku’s long history in several Dragon Ball anime and manga.
For unclear reasons, most of the characters shown appear to be children. While it can be assumed that someone used the Dragon Balls to accomplish this, the trailer doesn’t reveal who that could have been.
Plot details aside, the animation shown in the trailer is stunning. And Toriyama’s deeper involvement increases the chances that “Dragon Ball Daima” will have a big impact when it premieres in the second half of 2024.
