Visually, the animation is spectacular and the soundtrack captivating – no wonder it took home two Oscars, including the song for “Colors of the Wind.” The problem lies in the theme: as much as many people consider it cool to have an indigenous princess at Disney, it is undeniable that the film’s story offended many people by romanticizing the real and tragic story of a Native American.
In short, the film follows the love story between Pocahontas and John Smith, a European explorer. Romantic? No doubt. Historically wrong? For sure. The big climax of the film is when Pocahontas throws herself before her beloved, stopping her father from killing him and starting a war.
