Since the first film in the saga hit the big screen in 1977, each new work has added more Jedi to the Order. And while the original trilogy was limited in this regard, as the Jedi were nearly extinct, the number of Jedi increased dramatically during the prequel trilogy.
What are all the Jedi characters that exist in Star Wars?
The order of protectors of peace and justice in the Galactic Republic has several members, especially in the Old Republic and the New Jedi Order. Below are details on some of the galaxy’s most notable heroes:
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi is the first Jedi introduced in the saga, appearing in the film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977). During his exile, the famed Jedi Master played a pivotal role in the fate of the galaxy during the final days of the Galactic Republic.
Although he later sacrificed himself in combat against Darth Vader, his courage, loyalty, and dedication to the Order make him a great hero and master of two of the most famous Jedi, Anakin and Luke Skywalker.
Qui-Gon Jinn
Qui-Gon Jinn was an unorthodox Jedi Master: he valued the embrace of the Living Force more than strict adherence to tradition. He was killed by Darth Maul on Naboo, but managed to preserve his consciousness after his death, later guiding Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi. His first appearance was in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999).
Anakin Skywalker
Anakin Skywalker also made his first appearance in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. He was a legendary Jedi Knight and hero of the Clone Wars before turning to the dark side and becoming Darth Vader.
While still a child, Anakin Skywalker is sensitive to the Force and meets Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, being recruited into the Jedi Order and trained by Kenobi, according to Qui-Gon’s wishes.
Mace Windu
During the Clone Wars, Mace Windu, wielder of the purple lightsaber, was the most experienced member of the Jedi Council besides Yoda. During the dark days of the Republic, he was the greatest defender of the Jedi Order and its ancient traditions.
His first appearance was in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), and he presumably died in the third episode, when Anakin cut off his hand and Palpatine threw him out the window.
Yoda
Yoda is one of the most powerful Jedi Masters who ever lived. Known primarily for his distinctive speaking style, he has trained Jedi for over 500 years and is considered one of the wisest masters who ever lived. In the prequel trilogy, Yoda is seen as a wise mentor, often teaching and giving advice.
In Episode I – The Phantom Menace, he gives Obi-Wan Kenobi permission to train Anakin Skywalker after Qui-Gon Jinn’s death, predicting that the young man would cause big problems. Yoda’s first appearance in the original trilogy is in episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), in which he serves as a mentor to Luke Skywalker.
Fisto Kit
Kit Fisto was a wise Jedi Master who fought in the Clone Wars and ended up joining the Jedi High Council. He was killed along with other Jedi Masters on Coruscant while trying to arrest Darth Sidious. Kit Fisto first appeared in Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002).
Luminara Unduli
Luminara Unduli made her first appearance in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005). She was a Jedi Master during the final days of the Jedi Order. At the end of the war, Unduli fought in the Battle of Kashyyyk, and was later arrested and executed by the Grand Inquisitor.
Ki-Adi-Mundi
Ki-Adi-Mundi was a Jedi Master who served on the High Council and played an important role in several battles during the Clone Wars, becoming a Jedi General. His first appearance was in Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and his death was at the hands of Mygeeto.
Shaak Ti
Shaak Ti was a member of the Council and commander during the wars, for some time directing training on Kamino. She was a great warrior and a faithful follower of the Jedi teachings. He first appeared in Episode II – Attack of the Clones, and was killed by Anakin Skywalker during the siege of the Jedi Temple during the Great Jedi Purge.
Plo Koon
The first appearance of Plo Koon, Jedi Master and member of the Jedi High Council during the final years of the Galactic Republic, occurred in Episode I – The Phantom Menace. During the war, he led his battalion in several difficult operations and, due to his Kel Dor physiology, needed to wear a mask when in oxygen-containing environments. Koon was killed in his interceptor by a clone pilot when his fighter exploded and crashed.
Eeth Koth
Eeth Koth made his first appearance in the saga during Episode I – The Phantom Menace. He served on the Jedi High Council during the final years of the Galactic Republic and during the Clone Wars he served as a Jedi General. Koth was ultimately killed by Darth Vader in Episode II – Attack of the Clones.
Yarael Poof
Yarael Poof, a Quermian Jedi Master, is known for her exceptionally long neck, two brains, and an extra pair of arms, but also for her mastery of Jedi mind tricks and illusions. He served on the Jedi High Council during the High Republic Era and the final years of the Galactic Republic. His first appearance took place during Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and he was killed shortly before the start of the Clone Wars.
Saesee Tiin
Saesee Tiin, whose first appearance took place in Episode I – The Phantom Menace, was a Jedi Master who served on the High Council during the final years of the Galactic Republic. Tiin served as a Jedi General of the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars and was a great fighter pilot. Saesee Tiin was killed when he and three other Jedi Masters attempted to arrest Darth Sidious.
Luke Skywalker
Probably the most famous of all the Star Wars Jedi characters is Luke Skywalker. However, both Jedi Masters and Sith Lords have made it clear that Luke did not become a true Jedi until the end of the original trilogy.
Luke inherited his father’s Force sensitivity, but was unaware of his true origins until he met Obi-Wan Kenobi, when he was exposed to the Force by the experienced Jedi. He then becomes a shining knight, a hero of the Rebel Alliance and the only person who could turn Anakin Skywalker away from the dark side of the Force.
His first appearance is in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), and although Luke dies at the end of The Last Jedi, he returns as a Force spirit in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019) ).
Leila Organa
Ultimately, although the sequel trilogy showed that Leia possessed certain Force abilities, Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker confirmed that she had trained as a Jedi but refused to actually be a Jedi.
Her first appearance also occurs in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, and her death occurs in Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, when Leia uses the Force with marked intensity to reach her son on the other side of the galaxy .
