The liberal institute promotes forums to discuss the fight against poverty

With the theme From Poverty to Wealth, the Leader Training Institute of São Paulo (IFL-SP) will hold the 10th Freedom and Democracy Forum on the 20th with the aim of promoting debate and the exchange of ideas on liberalism and the fight against poverty. The title pays homage to the philosopher Adam Smith, who would have turned 300 in 2023, considered the “father” of modern economics and author of the classics The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations.

“We hosted the meeting so that our discussions on freedom and entrepreneurship reach a wider audience,” said engineer Gabriel Maradei, president of the Sao Paulo IFL.

This year the event will be opened by Gilson Rodrigues, president of G10 Favelas, a non-governmental organization (NGO) working to fight poverty. Closing the meeting will be Senegalese businesswoman and entrepreneur Magatte Wade, recognized internationally for her inspiring speeches and her work on behalf of less privileged communities.

There will also be a discussion on the documentary Pobreza SA (Poverty, Inc.), which deals with the industry that profits from misconceptions about fighting poverty. The producers worked for four years, filming in more than 20 countries and trying to uncover global humanitarian aid networks that, instead of helping to solve a problem, would contribute to the maintenance of poverty and extreme misery.

Values

The IFL-SP was founded in 2010 and, according to Maradei, seeks the “path of freedom”. “The path to freedom is to defend life, private property and the rule of law. The values of classical liberalism. It is a society that defends freedom of expression, the right to private property, recipes for prosperous societies,” he said .

Leader training takes place through courses and lectures at two levels. To join you must be nominated by a member and pass a selection process which takes place twice a year.

Classics

At each level, the member must read liberal classics, write reviews, and publish articles. Additionally, the scoring system includes volunteer work, online courses, and participation in projects that exercise leadership. The training aims to promote the characteristics of a good leader which, according to Maradei, are “empathy, good communication and a stimulating vision of the world”.

“We fight superficiality,” said the engineer, underlining that this is a serious flaw in a leader, especially in this age of social networks where people are tempted to give their opinion on everything.
