The Exorcist – Devotion is currently in theaters. As soon as the project was announced, director David Gordon Green and producer Jason Blum said it would be a trilogy like the one they already did for Halloween.
The duo uses the same formula: bring back the cast from the original film and continue the story of the first opus without considering the sequels, The Exorcist 2 – John Boorman’s The Heretic, which was released in 1978, and The Exorcist III William Peter Blatt. (1990).
In the feature film, Victor (Leslie Odom Jr.) is raising his daughter Angela (Lydia Jewett) alone. After being lost in the woods for 72 hours with her friend Catherine (Olivia O’Neill), a young girl begins to behave strangely.
Victor has to face terrible evil forces. Desperate and terrified, she echoes the only person alive who has ever witnessed such events: Chris McNeill (Ellen Boorstyn).
We spoke to David Gordon Green and Jason Blum at the theatrical release of The Exorcist: Allegiance. The producer told us that unlike the Halloween saga, where it was literally necessary to keep the films in limbo because the character played by Jamie Lee Curtis died in 2002’s Resurrection, the sequel to The Exorcist didn’t call their trilogy into question, especially because Helen. Burstyn has never agreed to return until now.
“We don’t need to delete anything, we just don’t recognize these movies in our timeline“, he says.
We have a general plan
Therefore devotion is the first part of a larger work. And if the script for the second opus has already been written, the latter has not yet been filmed. Jason Bloom explains:
“The plan is to make three “Exorcist” movies. We have a road map. It’s evolving and will probably change depending on the audience’s reaction to this film, but we kind of have a general plan.”
Titled The Exorcist: Deceiver, the sequel to Devotion is currently scheduled to hit our theaters on April 16, 2025. But the road map Jason Bloom may be upset…

Is the sequel in jeopardy?
The Hollywood Reporter It is revealed that Universal has acquired the rights to the franchise for $400 million, a figure that includes the film’s streaming rights on Peacock along with theme park extensions.
So The Exorcist: Devotion should make enough money at the box office to keep the horror franchise going.
But David Gordon Green’s feature film was poorly received by critics, earning just $26.5 million at the North American box office in its opening weekend.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, each film in the trilogy must gross at least $133 million to break even. These disappointing results may call further into question.

devotion
If Universal confirms there will be two more Exorcist films, some US media sources say changes could be made. being thus David Gordon Green Production of the second and third films will no longer be guaranteed.
Involved in the project from the beginning, the director said recently The Hollywood Reporter :”I make things up as I go. I’d be thrilled to be in the director’s chair for a sequel, but for now I’m managing the sequel from a narrative perspective and keeping an eye on other projects..”
The Exorcist: The Liar Therefore, it should hit theaters on April 16, 2025, with or without Gordon Green directing. However, the date of the third and last part is unknown.
It is not yet known if the sequel will focus on the character of Victor and his daughter Angela or if the film will focus on the reunion of Chris and Regan (Linda Blair).
