Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Tuesday that Kiev used long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles supplied by the United States.
Kiev has repeatedly asked the U.S. government for ATACMS, hoping the missiles could strengthen Ukraine’s ability to attack and disrupt supply lines, air bases and rail networks in Russian-occupied territory that cannot be reached with short-range equipment.
“Today, special thanks to the United States. Our agreements with President Biden are being implemented. With great precision, the ATACMS missiles have proven their worth,” he said in his evening speech.
It is the first officially confirmed use of the ATACMS, which can fly distances of up to 306 km, in Ukraine.
On Tuesday morning, the Ukrainian military said it had struck two airfields used by Russia in the Moscow-occupied cities of Luhansk and Berdiansk.
According to reports, nine helicopters, an air defense missile launcher and other equipment were destroyed, runways were hit and Russian forces suffered heavy losses. The Russian Defense Ministry did not mention the attacks.
