Putin says US is deepening war in Ukraine; he condemns the sending of missiles

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that the United States is digging deeper into the conflict in Ukraine and is making a mistake by supplying Kiev with long-range ATACMS missiles.

Putin said at a news conference during a visit to China that he had briefed Chinese President Xi Jinping on the situation in Ukraine “in detail.” He said “external factors” and “common threats” have only served to strengthen cooperation between Russia and China.

The Kremlin leader said Washington’s decision to supply the Army’s Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), the use of which Kiev confirmed on Tuesday, “only prolongs Ukraine’s agony.”

“First, it is clear that this causes damage and creates an additional threat. Secondly, it is clear that we will be able to repel these attacks. War is war,” Putin said.

“But the most important thing is that, fundamentally, they do not have the ability to change the situation at the front… This is another mistake of the United States.”

Ukraine had repeatedly asked Washington for ATACMS missiles to help it attack and disrupt supply lines, air bases and rail networks in Russian-occupied territory.

“A bigger mistake, still invisible, but of great importance, is that the United States is increasingly personally involved in this conflict. And let no one say that it has nothing to do with it. We believe so,” Putter said.

He noted that the United States had sent two aircraft carrier groups to the Mediterranean Sea in response to growing violence between Israel and the Palestinians, and said it had ordered Russian planes with hypersonic Kinzhal missiles to patrol the Black Sea.

Putin said it would be good if the West started talking about the need to resolve the crisis in Ukraine by peaceful means, although he cited no examples.

Russia has long said it is willing to negotiate, but only if Kiev accepts the “new realities,” namely Moscow’s occupation of more than a sixth of Ukraine.

Kiev insists on the total withdrawal of Russian forces, including from the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Moscow in 2014.
