Oprah reveals that salary for role in The Color Purple ‘changed everything’

Oprah Winfrey is the producer of the new adaptation of The Color Purplefilm directed by Steven Spielberg in which he worked 38 years ago. She was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress and will now have another opportunity to win the award in another category — with the musical version that will be released in January 2024.

In an interview with Essence (via Variety), Oprah revealed the salary she received for her work on the 1985 film. For her, although it was relatively low, the payment came later, in the form of an opportunity to advance professionally.

I can’t even begin to tell you what it means to me — a person who didn’t want anything else in life, and to suddenly be in The Color Purple. And God taught me to surrender — that was the biggest lesson for me. They were only offering $35,000 to be in this movie, and it was the best $35,000 I ever got. It changed everything and taught me so much. It’s God acting in my life.

In the adaptation, the role of Sofia, before Winfreynow it will be Danielle Brooksknown as Orange Is the New Black. She has already played the character on Broadway and received a Tony nomination.
