Who will perform Nomadland, the big winner of the 93rd ceremony? Are there any French chances? Elements of the answers below with an appointment reminder.
Jane Campion in power
As of 2021, this is a Netflix movie that tops the list with 12 nominations: Jane Campion’s “Dog Power” is a 2022 favorite. If the films on the platforms are numerous, this year’s nominations also nicely leave a share of theatrically released productions. Dune (10 nominations), West Side Story and Belfast (7 nominations) or The Williams Method (6 nominations), all five came out on the big screen, especially among the nominated films.
Welcome to Jane Campion’s Double: Nominated for Best Director for Best Director, 28 years after her piano lesson, the New Zealand filmmaker is writing history. To date, the same director has not been nominated twice.
For reference, some of the female directors who have been nominated so far are number 7: Catherine Bigelow (the first woman to win an Oscar in 2010 for Miners), Jane CampionSophia Coppola, Lina Vertmüller, Greta Gerwig, Emerald Fennel and Chloe Zhao (the second director to win an Oscar in 2021. Nomadic country).
6 decades of Steven Spielberg!
In addition to Jane Campion, the Best Director category hails the Champion in terms of longevity: Steven Spielberg has been nominated for six decades, with three types of close encounters from the 1970s to 2022, and his West side story. The category also includes one of this year’s surprises: Ryusuke Hamaguchi. With Drive My Car, the Japanese director could follow in the footsteps of Bong Joon Ho and the Parasite. Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza) and Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) Complete the category. As for the best anonymous directorial films, mention CODA (Apple TV +), Do Not Look (Netflix), Dunes, Williams method And Nightmare Alley, all three have been released in theaters.
Kristen Stewart in the movie Majesty, Lady Gaga Snubbed
Surprises emerge from one ceremony to another: Although Kristen Stewart has avoided SAG Awards and BAFTA nominations for Spencer for Lady Di Roll, she is definitely nominated here. This is also his first Oscar nomination. On the other hand, there is no Lady Gaga for the role played in the house. Ridley Scott’s film (also “The Last Duel” does not receive a nomination) is almost not nominated, despite the appearance of actors in the 80s wigs.
Penelope Cruz has been nominated for Best Actress for Pedro Almodვარvar’s Madres Paralelas. She will compete with Jessica Chastain (in the eyes of Tammy Faye), Olivia Coleman (Missing Daughter) and Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos).
Ex-Spider-Man in the Actors category!
In terms of actors, a few major absentees like Bradley Cooper (Alley of Nightmares), Leonardo DiCaprio (Do not look up) Or Adam Driver (Gucci House, The last duel Or even Aneta). Javier Bardem (Being in Ricardo), Benedict Cumberbatch (Dog power), Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick … Boom!), Will Smith (Williams method) And Denzel Washington (Macbeth tragedy) were preferred.
Marvel with dual side visual effects
If the speculation was going well about Spider-Man’s possible nomination for No Way Home in one of the Queen categories, the superhero film would have to settle for one nomination in the technical category, in this case with the best visual effects. Marvel doubles down by watching another of his films, called: Shang Chi and the Legend of the 10 Seals.
French (rare) chances
Several Frenchmen are participating this year. France can still rely on Bruno Delbonelli, the main operator Macbeth tragedy. Three co-productions will be presented, in this case Escape, an animated documentary between Cannes 2020 labels (but not yet released in France, soon to be released on art), Julie 12 in chapter by Joachim Trier and CODA, American remake of La Famille Bélier, co-produced by the French. Note that Escape is nominated three times: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Documentary, and Best Animated Film! Alexander Desplat, often referred to, is not here this year. Nor anything in terms of short films.
Inclusion and diversity
As in 2021, the Oscars are more inclusive, including nominations for foreign films (Drive my carThe first Japanese film to be nominated for Best Picture, either Madras parallel Through quotes from Penelope Cruz), as well as African-American actors and actresses (Aunjanue Ellis, Will Smith). Note that with the 10th nomination (for the Macbeth tragedy), Denzel Washington becomes the most cited black actress in Oscar history. In the past he has already won Oscars for Training Day (Best Actor in a Leading Role) and Fame (Second Role).
Regarding LGBT involvement, we mention, as mentioned Variety Reporter That Kristen Stewart is the first openly lesbian actress to be nominated for Best Actress nomination in the last 20 years. The last “outgoing” actor was nominated Ian McKellen in the 2002 film “The Lord of the Rings: The Ring Partnership.” Ariana Deboz, nominated in the West Side Story, is also an open-minded spy.
Involvement of CODA in several more categories, including Best Actor for Troy Kotsur, Deaf Actor, who was recently awarded a BAFTA. However, there was no nominee for Marley Matlin, who was the first deaf actress to win the Oscar Les Enfants du silence in 1987. He is also among the CODA actors.
Recall that the 94th Academy Awards will be held on March 27, from Hollywood.
