The action, coordinated by the teams of the Narcotics Repression Commissariat, identified the machine guns in the trunk of a car in the Gardênia Azul neighbourhood, an area contested by drug trafficking and the militia. The weapons, packed in black bags and tape, were taken to the police station in the northern area of RJ.
Also on Thursday, the Southeast Military Command informed that the director of the War Arsenal will be fired following the theft of the machine guns. In a press conference, Brigadier General Maurício Vieira Gama underlines that military personnel were involved in the theft, but he was not identified so as not to compromise the investigations.
“The most probable investigation is that the weapons were diverted through theft with the participation of military personnel from the São Paulo War Arsenal, although so far no hypothesis has been ruled out. There is the possibility that the loss occurred in the period of from 5 to 8 September,” the general said in the press conference.

Machine gun theft
Investigations into the case have been ongoing since Tuesday the 10th, when it was discovered that 13 .50 caliber machine guns and eight 7.62 caliber machine guns were missing. Nearly 500 people spent a week in barracks as the investigation took its first steps last week.
On Tuesday the 17th, 320 soldiers stationed in the unit were released from the location. Another 160 remained to continue routine barracks duties or because they were still of interest to the progress of the investigation.
Relatives of those stationed experienced moments of apprehension outside the military unit. The .50 caliber Browning machine guns, like those stolen last week from an army barracks in Barueri, Greater Sao Paulo, are weapons used in war and have a high destructive power, being capable of firing up to 550 rounds per minute, according to the technical specifications of the weapon.
Because of their high firepower, .50 machine guns have become coveted by organized criminal organizations, such as the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and the Comando Vermelho (CV), which have specialized gunsmiths.
They were present in important events, such as the murder of the king of the border, the mega-trafficker Jorge Rafaat Toumani, between Brazil and Paraguay, in 2016. On that occasion, the weapon was found attached inside a vehicle adapted for the attack, centered on the dispute over control of drug trafficking routes between the two countries.
