The expansion of peace talks in Colombia this week to include another group of former FARC guerrillas increases the chances of reducing the violence of the country’s armed conflict, according to Norway, which is assisting the process.
The Colombian government on Monday declared a three-month ceasefire with the Estado Mayor Central (EMC), the largest branch of the FARC, starting formal peace talks with the organization to end its participation in a conflict of the forces internal armies for almost sixty years. .
President Gustavo Petro’s government, which promotes “total peace” with several armed groups, has already started negotiations with the National Liberation Army (ELN) and will seek peace with Segunda Marquetalia, another FARC dissident group.
Norway said in a statement Friday that it praised the government and the EMC Group for starting the peace talks.
βIt is positive that the peace process in Colombia is extending to negotiations with other armed groups,β said Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.
βA peaceful solution to the conflict between the government and the EMC-FARC would represent an important contribution to reducing violence affecting vulnerable groups in the country’s conflict regions,β he added.
Norway, which has been involved in peace negotiations in Colombia for decades, said it had accepted the parties’ invitation as a guarantor country “of a peaceful solution for the good of Colombian civilians.”
