The National Institute of Meteorology warns of a health risk with temperatures up to 5º above average
OR National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued this Friday, 20, a new warning indicating a heat wave in the region Midwest. According to the warning, the temperature could be up to 5ºC above average, classified by the institute as a “great danger” situation. The phenomenon should last until Monday 23rd.
The Inmet system indicates that the heat wave is expected to reach the states of Goias, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Suland small parts of some Northern States such as Tocantins, Rondonia AND For. It is expected that at least 263 municipalities will be affected in these units of the federation. Inmet warns of health risks due to high temperatures.
In Cuiabá (MT), the maximum temperature expected for this Saturday, the 21st, is 41ºC. Palmas (TO) is expected to record up to 38ºC, Goiânia (GO), 36ºC, Campo Grande (MS), 35ºC, and Brasilia, 31ºC, according to Inmet.
Since September, Brazil has been hit by heat waves, which have caused temperatures to rise in several states of the country. Last month, the city of Sao Paulo broke temperature records, reaching almost 37°C. The heat, according to experts, is due to the intensification of climate change, which has caused extreme events throughout the country.
Global warming has increased the occurrence of natural disasters. Last month, a cyclone hit the south of the country, causing deaths and missing people. In the North, an unprecedented drought hits the Amazon, causing animal deaths and food shortages in cities.
Health care in the hot season
The high temperatures caused by the heat wave can pose health risks, according to Inmet. The scenario is more dangerous for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, people with comorbidities and sedentary people. High temperatures can even influence the occurrence of premature births.
Since the human body is sensitive to external temperature, when it is very hot it acts to regulate the body temperature so that it is ideal for carrying out its activities. To do this, it promotes the dilation of the arteries to dissipate heat. This process can lead to risks, especially for people with heart disease.
In this sense, the recommendation is that people pay particular attention to avoid complications. To do this you need to consume a large amount of water, avoid physical activity and not expose yourself to the sun during the hottest hours of the day.
