The decision was taken during a meeting between the negotiating committee set up by the rector’s office and representatives of the student movement
After 17 days of strike, an agreement with the university, this Friday the 20th, put an end to the student strike State University of Campinas (Unicamp). According to the institution, the students pledged to liberate, during this weekend, the building of the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Informatics (Imecc), which had been occupied at the beginning of the movement. The decision was taken during a meeting between the negotiating committee set up by the rector’s office and representatives of the student movement.
Members of the Central Student Directory (DCE) confirmed the agreement and said that most of the requests have been fulfilled by the university. In a statement, Unicamp said that, based on a mutual agreement, adjustments had been made, deadlines set and monitoring committees formed for each of the agenda items of the negotiations.
Among the demands: trans quotas, PCD quotas and accessibility, indigenous permanence, dignified living conditions, defense of public universities, fight against sexual and gender violence, against electronic point, hiring of teachers and staff, non-punishment of students who they mobilized and the definitive removal of the teacher who was said to have brandished a knife against the students.
The document with the satisfied proposals and the respective deadlines is being prepared this Saturday 21st. “A statement on the initiatives that will be taken following the negotiation will be sent to the entire academic University. The Rectorate reiterates its commitment to dialogue, democracy and the search for a plural and inclusive university”, he stated.
The teacher had the knife confiscated by the police. He and the allegedly threatened student were taken to the police station. The professor was dismissed during the second semester and risks administrative disciplinary proceedings at the university. Police believed the students had attacked the teacher. The teacher’s defense claims that he acted in self-defense.
