Three-time Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif began his party’s campaign for next year’s elections on Saturday after returning from a four-year self-imposed exile in London, vowing to tackle record inflation.
“I want to serve this nation,” the 73-year-old veteran politician said in his speech before thousands of supporters in his hometown of Lahore.
“My only desire is to see this nation prosper,” he said, after comparing the prices of essential goods today with those of his last term, before he was ousted in 2017.
He promised to work towards economic recovery, without presenting a plan, saying: “We will control inflation.”
Sharif has not set foot in Pakistan since he left for London in 2019 to receive medical treatment while serving a 14-year prison sentence for corruption. His convictions remain in place, but a court ruling on Thursday prevented authorities from arresting him until Tuesday, when he is scheduled to appear in court.
While he cannot run or be elected to public office because of his beliefs, his legal team says he intends to appeal and his party has said he aims to become prime minister for a fourth time.
