On screen, Louis de Funes forms a hilarious duet with his sidekick Jean Carmet. Both portray Glod and Bombay, two bottle-loving old peasants who live far from modern life.

One night, an alien, played by the still little-known Jacques Villeret, lands in a flying saucer in Glod’s garden. As a sign of greeting, the latter offers him his famous cabbage soup.

Released in 1981, La Soupe aux choux was a moderate commercial success compared to Louis de Funes’ usual scores, grossing just over 3 million at the box office. In addition, the film received mostly negative feedback from the press.

However, viewers liked this comedy, mixed with science fiction, now a cult.
