The Minister of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture, Paulo Teixeira, expressed his opinion on Monday the 23rd regarding the presidential veto on the timing law. “I understand that a law cannot contradict the Constitution. “The Federal Court (STF) has already decided and I see no other way than to veto it,” he said.
President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva (PT) sanctioned the law with broad vetoes, fully maintaining only 9 of the 33 articles approved by Congress. The temporal thesis established that the delimitation of indigenous territories should only respect the surface area occupied by the original peoples until the date of promulgation of the federal Constitution, 5 October 1988.
For Paulo Teixeira the time has come to wait for the STF’s definitions on monitoring compliance with the decision. “Until then, I see no other path than the veto. If the veto is lifted, any political party will be able to complain of unconstitutionality to the Supreme Court,” he said.
