Broadcasting from 2015 to 2022, The Last Kingdom has been a popular success on the BBC and then Netflix for 5 thrilling seasons, telling the epic tale of Uhtred Bebanburg (Alexander Dreymon). This fictional world ended in 2023 with The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, which marks the end of the series.

You should know that The Last Kingdom is an adaptation of a literary series Saxon stories Bernard Cornwell, a British writer, considered a great specialist in historical novels and to whom we owe several series of books.

Good News, a new fiction adaptation of another of his literary series – The Saga of King Arthur Narrated in 3 volumes from 1998 to 2001 – now available on OCS in France. Titled The Winter King, this new series in 10 episodes will tell the genesis of the future legendary King Arthur before the creation of the Knights of the Round Table. Note that the first two episodes of The Winter King were directed by Otto Bathurst, the director of the film Robin Hood, along with Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx.

Created and written by Kate Brooke (Mr. Selfridge) and Ed Whitmore (The Answer, English Murders), The Winter King focuses on his rivalry with his father, Uther, and the Silurians, led by the ruthless Gundleus. But above all, it is the story of the emancipation and learning of Arthur Pendragon, the future king, and his incredible epic as Uhtred Bebanburg.

The audience is immersed in a dark period of British history where Britain is deeply divided between its tribes. The threat of the Saxons and internal conflicts threaten this land, which is desperately searching for someone who will allow it to unite and who will save all the people. The Winter King goes back to the origins of the famous King Arthur story.

In terms of casting, fans of the series will find familiar faces like Iain de Caestecker (Leopold Fitz from Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD) as Arthur Pendragon and Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan) as Uther Pendragon, his father. Arthur.

Additionally, the cast includes Nathaniel Martello-White (Wrong, Little Axe) as Merlin, Simon Merrells (Spartacus: War of the Damned, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) as Gundalus. King of the Silures, the Celtic people of present-day Wales, Eli James (I Can Destroy You, War of the Worlds) as Nimue, a druid with apocalyptic visions.

The series is narrated by Stuart Campbell (Rogue Heroes), who plays Derfel Cadarn, the warrior and disciple of Arthur who saved his life as a child. This is the whole subtlety of this version of the Arthurian legend, told in two times. Derfell, who has become a monk, writes his memoirs for Igraine, Queen of Powys, recounting his youthful adventures with Arthur.

Then we follow the parallel adventures of this man who became a warrior, friend and close confidant of the future King Arthur. This dual narrative is a kind of mise en abyme that approaches a realistic story that is more focused on the strategist and warrior spirit of Arthur the statesman.

The Winter King series currently airs on OCS Max and is available on OCS on demand.
