USA: mass shooting causes deaths in a small American town; the shooter is considered a fugitive

Police say at least two locations in the city of Lewiston, a restaurant and a bowling center, were targeted by shooters.

The police in the American city of Lewiston, in the State of Maine, warned on Thursday evening (25/10) that an armed man was at large after having killed, according to local press reports, at least 16 people.

Residents of the city, which has 38,000 inhabitants, were advised to take shelter.

Police said they were investigating the attacks in “multiple locations” and released photos of a suspect.

There are also unconfirmed reports of at least 50 people injured.

The White House said President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation and will continue to receive updates.

In a statement on the social network X (formerly Twitter), the Maine State Police said: “There is an active shooter in Lewiston.”

“We are asking people to shelter in place. Please stay indoors with your doors closed.”

Police said they responded to calls at two locations, a restaurant called Schemengees and a bowling alley, Sparetime Recreation.

The two locations appear to be about four miles, or a 10-minute drive, from each other.

Central Maine Medical Center said it is treating victims of a “mass shooting” and is seeking coordination with other area hospitals to treat the wounded.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office released two images of a suspect, saying he was at large and asking for the public’s help in identifying him.

The photos show a bearded man in a brown coat carrying a large firearm entering a building.

Police also shared a photo of a white vehicle believed to have been used by the killer.

Lewiston Public Schools Superintendent Jake Langlais said in a statement that the district’s schools will remain closed Thursday.
