Police in the United States (US) are looking for Army reservist Robert Card, 40, who killed 22 people and injured 60 others in the state of Maine.
The killer opened fire in two different places: in a bowling alley and in a bar-restaurant in the north-eastern state of the country, on the border with Canada. The massacre occurred this Wednesday (25th), at night in the city of Lewiston, the second largest in Maine. Authorities asked residents to stay in their homes.
The man, classified as “armed and dangerous”, fled after the attacks. CNN International reported that he is a certified firearms instructor and Army reservist.
Police have released the photograph of Robert Card. In it he appears bearded, wearing a brown jacket, blue trousers and brown shoes, as well as carrying a semi-automatic rifle. The motives for the crime are not yet known.
The recent massacre, one of the bloodiest in the country in recent years, adds to a long list of shootings that often shake the United States.
“We have confirmed 22 deaths and many, many more injured”he told CNN Robert McCarthycity councilor of Lewiston, a city of approximately 36,000 inhabitants.
“Our hospitals are not equipped to deal with these types of shootings,” he added, before reporting that the attacks left between 50 and 60 people injured. Maine Secretary of Public Safety, Mike Sauschuckhe told the press that the police are on the streets looking for the suspect.
After being informed of the tragedy, Pres Joe Biden left a state dinner honoring the Australian prime minister to contact authorities in Maine and offer federal government support, according to the White House.
