This is nothing new: romance and sexuality are recurring themes in young adult fiction. Today it is more than ever thanks to streaming platforms with many hits like Euphoria, Sex Education, Elite… and the list goes on. But have the desires of the new generation changed?
This is what reveals American study It was conducted by the Organization of Scientists and Storytellers on a sample of 1,500 young viewers between the ages of 10 and 24. According to the results, 47.5% believe that “Sex does not work in movies and TV series“.
For 44.3% of them, romance is overrepresented in the stories. On the contrary, 51.5% want a story focused on friendship and platonic relationships. More surprisingly, 39% want to see more asexual or romantically involved characters on screen.
How to explain such indicators? Yalda T. Uhls, founder of the Center for Scientists and Storytellers and co-author of the study, explains that the sexual activity of young people is much less than that of their parents at the same age.
Many of them even prefer to be alone. An observation that joins that the Ifop survey institute in 2022 – 43% of young people aged 15 to 24 did not have sexual intercourse that year.
This situation is particularly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the isolation seen among many young people after multiple incarcerations. “Unfortunately, today’s generation of teenagers is in crisis“- explains in the study.
“Too often, teenagers project their subjective views on what is best for them. We don’t listen to them enough and we don’t include them in the creative process as often as we should.”
