Considered one of the greatest players in the history of the Brazilian women’s team, Cristiane was once again called up to play the friendlies against Canada. The Santos player celebrated her return to Amarelinha after two and a half years and underlined her role as one of the most experienced in the squad.
“I have been preparing for a long time to return to the Brazilian team. I think first of all that I am happy to be in the team and joining or playing is a consequence of what happens during the match. If it happens, fantastic, I will be happy, if it doesn’t happen I will be happy the same, because I think it’s important to be part of the group, to pass on this experience to the girls, who despite having competed at the Olympics, at the World Cup, bringing it to them is motivating”, said Cristiane.
On the field, Cristiane has a strong CV to inspire her colleagues. At 38 years old, the player has already played in five World Cups and four Olympics, a competition in which she became the top scorer in history between men and women, with 14 goals. Her good performances earned the attacker the title of third best player in the world in 2007 and 2008.
Upon returning to the national team, Cristiane will meet Arthur Elias, former Corinthians coach who replaced Pia Sundhage, responsible for the player’s failure to be called up for the World Cup in Australia. The attacker evaluated the work of the new coach, with whom he already worked in the Olympic team.
“Arthur has worked with me, some people from his commission have worked with me, so he already knows me, he has this ease with them and today I play a role that is much more than a centre-forward to exactly hold the line of defense for the other girls of be able to do it. So he has integrated very well, he talks a lot, he guides us, he is satisfied with what he asks us to do and we do it very well”, added the striker.
Brazil is preparing for the two friendlies against Canada. The first will take place this Saturday, at 3.30pm (Brasilia time), at the Saputo Stadium, in Montreal. The teams will face each other again on Tuesday, at 8.30pm, at the Wanderers Grounds.
