After the painful shooting of his film Coup de cœur, whose debts took him twenty years, he was seriously burdened by bitter failures in cinemas. to saddle up and pay off his creditors, with the film being a huge success. And that’s only fair.
If the indestructible myth of the vampire count born from the pen of Bram Stoker has been revisited on the screen more than 200 times, the version provided by Coppola is undoubtedly the most faithful to the original work. It can be viewed or previewed on Amazon Prime via Warner Pass.
The filmmaker’s version differs from many previous versions in that, just as in the novel, Dracula first appears as an old man and becomes younger as the film progresses through blood consumption; True to this, one of the key phrases that repeats itself in the film: “Blood is life!”
Admiring a lavish production, shot entirely in a studio, the film is a huge sum of talent that creates an authentic masterpiece. The costumes have already been signed by the great and late Eiko Ishioka, whose work was rightfully awarded an Oscar.
The quality of visual effects and special effects was still done in the old fashioned way, at a time when not all CGI invaded the screens (and, by the way, signed the son of the film director, Roman Coppola). The quality of the cast’s interpretation is in unison, dominated by Gary Oldman’s masterful and striking performance in the title role, supported by the brilliant Anthony Hopkins, who plays his constant nemesis, Professor Van Helsing.
And how can we not mention the extraordinary, hypnotic soundtrack, which has touched the memory of more than one moviegoer by Wojciech Kilar? The same one who released another soundtrack thirteen years earlier, also for a fabulous film that went down in history: The King and the Bird.
If there’s only one adaptation of Bram Stoker’s work to watch, this is it. You know what’s left to do…
