The economist had a sudden heart attack in Shanghai
Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang died this Friday (27), aged 68, after suffering a sudden heart attack in Shanghai.
A statement released by state broadcaster CCTV indicated that rescue teams tried to resuscitate the politician, but he did not survive.
Beijing’s Foreign Ministry, through its spokeswoman, expressed “deep condolences” for the “tragic passing” of the former prime minister.
Li remained at the helm of the government between 2013 and 2023, taking charge of the nation’s economic policy around the same time that Chinese President Xi Jinping came to power.
A lawyer and economist, Li left his post in March due to term limits, handing the job to Li Qiang.
During his tenure as prime minister, Beijing continued the fight against the huge debt generated by the vast stimulus programs following the 2008 global financial crisis.
