Is Albert Dupontel’s runoff good? The first viewers give their opinion on the film

Adieu les idiots, three years after the second tour, Albert Dupontel’s long-awaited new film has just been released in cinemas. After filming for Sandrine Cyberlain and Virgin Ephyra, Albert Dupontel directs Cécile de France as a political journalist who must cover the second round of the presidential election.

He is surrounded by Nicolas Marie, as the cameraman, and Albert Dupont himself, who plays the candidate at the forefront of this fictitious election.

Did the feature film convince the first audience? While it gets an average 3.1 out of 5 from the press, it rises to a 3.8 from the public, thanks to 624 people who have rated it so far.* The vast majority of critics posted on AlloCiné are positive.

Audiences especially appreciated the film’s acting and burlesque aspect, which Albert Dupont himself described as a “modern fairy tale” (our podcast interview below).

They liked it

Tornoriak: “Always a good, beautiful story, very good actors, Dupontel, who is sometimes really expressive that we do without dialogue, Cécile de France as a very good journalist and with a humor that is sour enough, but not too much, and Nicolas Marie, who we have already seen in the previous In the movie, a bit of comic relief, but it works very well. We will not be bored even for a moment!

Remil: “At first glance, we can only rejoice at the numerous comedy sketches that are quite irresistible throughout the film. That said, the director simultaneously and cleverly reveals a much more serious and dark secondary take on a political theme with a capital P in today’s 2023. The movie is worth watching again and again.

The humor is very relevant, even with a few laugh-out-loud passages

Reviews from Enthusiast: “I was expecting an extremely caustic comedy about the political world, but we are far from that and instead have a modern fable in the tradition of his last two films. (…) The humor is very relevant, even with laugh-out-loud passages, often due to the always brilliant Nicolas Marie.

Claudine G: “An original and surprising film in large part, its plot, which is far from banal. Well interpreted, despite some length, this “family” and political story is extraordinary. In these difficult times, this is a film that comforts…

Some of the audience reviews are more mixed, especially because of the high expectations surrounding Albert Dupontel, whose every film is an event, especially after Adieu les cons and his 7 Césars were huge successes.

They didn’t like it

Math 719: “There was an idea, but everything was disappointing. An improbable and far-fetched scenario. Despite a good cast and a few hiccups, the film takes too long. Some good moments, but still a little disappointing. Dupontel specializes in wacky style, whether we agree or not!

Rvicho: “What a disappointment to me, who adores Dupont and his genius. A silly movie whose plot is steeped in stupidity and simplicity. Hopelessly sluggish production and dialogue.

The script gets bogged down in silliness

Jean-Pierre Jumes:For this second round, it’s best to stay away. The script does not hold up and boredom sets in quickly. We also feel that the actors are “rowing”. On the other hand, the processing is excellent, both for photography and sound.

Philip A:Too naive and long… it lacks the poetic delirium of “Goodbye Up There” or the crazy side of “Adieu les cons”. So disappointed with the story, which is too sweet and predictable with its likable actors and actresses who are enjoyable to watch, but remain a little too much in their register.

For reference, three heroes are at the center of the second round, this new story born from the imagination of Albert Dupontel: Pierre-Henri Mercier (Albert Dupontel), presidential candidate, heir to a powerful French family, and newcomer to politics, Miss Pove. (Cécile de France), a disgraced political journalist and his cameraman colleague Gus (Nicolas Marie).

The second round is currently in theaters.
