Warning – The article below contains some spoilers. on “Saw X” and several previous films in the saga. If we imagine your being here means you’ve seen most of them, please continue, if not.
With ten episodes spanning twenty years (including seven between 2004 and 2010), the Saw saga has quickly established itself as one of the most prolific in the horror genre.
By comparison, Halloween has had thirteen films released in just forty-five years, and Friday the 13th has stopped (for now) after its twelfth opus, which hit theaters when the franchise was thirty years old.
Like many of his counterparts, Jigsaw never ceases to shine in cinema. Although the character played by Tobin Bell died in Saw III, or Episode VII, 3D, it was presented as “The Final Chapter”. From flashbacks to The Disciples, his trappings and legacy have lived on in his wake, but he’s back, in the flesh, in the movie, which hits theaters on Wednesday, October 25.
Resurrection does not appear to be just a plot device. The story takes place between the events of Saw I and II and shows his revenge against con men who claimed to be able to cure his cancer, all the better to relieve him of his money. You don’t think for a second that they’ve attacked the wrong person, whose return is at the heart of one of the most popular films in the franchise. And the last?
Will Amanda and John return?
Nothing is less certain. In the weeks leading up to its release, director Kevin Greitert seemed to indicate that Saga was not particularly intended. But the story was different from producer Oren Kules, who was no less cautious: “We are a little superstitious”– he said Comicbook.com last September.
“We tend not to act too quickly (…) we have ideas for what’s next, but we haven’t put them down on paper.” saw an adventure.
But how ? There have been several other (Saw X) or less successful (Jigsaw, Spiral) attempts to revive the saga, which offer several possibilities for continuation. One does not interfere with the other.
Stay in the past
Given the public and critical success of Saw, and allow Tobin Bell to participate in anything other than flashbacks embedded in the story.
This may also explain the return of Hoffman’s (Kostas Mandilor) character, a policeman who turns out to be one of Jigsaw’s accomplices at the end of the fourth film, in the post-credits scene. Officially, his appearance is just fan service. But who knows, it wasn’t also testing the waters to show us more of it?
Capitalization on Jigsaw (film)
Having failed, a sequel like the reboot was forgotten when Spiral came to do the same four years later. But have we really finished this branch of history in which we found a new disciple of John Cramer? And a longtime accomplice, too.
Because Logan Nelson (Matt Passmore) revealed that he had a hand in setting up many of Jigsaw’s traps. Including the famous inverted wolf trap, an iconic object of the saga since the first opus. The fact that we never heard of him until this movie came out suggests that maybe he thinks of himself as more important than he was in the larger story of the franchise.
Especially since Saw 3D taught us that after being one of his victims and losing a leg in the process, Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) gave it to John. So why not build a bridge between these two generations of killers?
Return the spiral
This is perhaps the most improbable hypothesis. At the end of the spiral, the new killer (Max Minghella) eludes the police and wins. A sequel could have focused on Ezekiel Banks (Chris Rock) tracking her down.
But the fact that the next film is a prequel to Saw II, featuring none of the characters from the 2021 opus, says a lot about the producers’ desire not to follow up with one of the franchise’s least beloved opus.
If the success of Saw X makes them want to create new traps, the chances of going in that direction are slim. Unless they rely on the latest Opus properties to remedy the situation.
And finally, there’s one last possibility: to go in none of these directions, to go forward in time and make little Carlos (Jorge Brisenio), saved here by John with a redemptive impulse, as his new heir. The game must start over. When and how remains to be seen.
