Netanyahu attacks Hamas intelligence chiefs, then apologises

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attacked his intelligence chiefs on Platform submitted a request for an apology.

Although senior officials – from the heads of the military and the Shin Bet national spy service to his finance minister – have acknowledged their failures, Netanyahu has not.

He only said there would be time to ask difficult questions, including about himself, after the war.

Israel’s military spokesman, asked about Netanyahu’s comments during a daily briefing with journalists, declined to respond, saying: “We are at war now, focus on the war.”

Israeli officials said the events leading up to the Hamas attack will be investigated, but that the current focus is on the conflict.

Netanyahu’s now-deleted post said: “At no time and at no stage was a warning given to Prime Minister Netanyahu about Hamas’ war intentions. To the contrary, all security officials, including the head of The army and the head of the Shin Bet estimated that Hamas was discouraged and interested in a solution.”

“I offer full support to all heads of the security services,” he said.

Netanyahu’s initial comments were promptly rebuked by current and former allies, including Benny Gantz, a former defense minister who now sits in Netanyahu’s war cabinet.

Gantz said on X that Netanyahu should retract what he said and leave the issue alone.

“When we are at war, the leadership must show responsibility, decide to do the right things and strengthen the forces so that they can accomplish what we ask of them,” Gantz said.
