BODY DOUBLE (1984)
First stop: the mid-eighties. Kitsch is the golden rule here. A year after Scarface, Brian De Palma radically changed the tone with Body Double, a crazy and terrifying homage to the cinema of Alfred Hitchcock.
The story follows Jack, a somewhat unsuccessful actor, who stays at his friend’s apartment. A large window overlooks the opposite side of the building and the apartment of a particularly attractive young woman. When the latter is brutally murdered in front of him, Jack finds himself in an affair that will shake up his previously peaceful everyday life.
Fun, surprising and sexy Body Double pushes every slider to the max. It’s a love letter to horror and erotic cinema, with a meta-view of the industry, all set in angry Los Angeles. The highlight of the film is none other than this crazy club scene, punctuated by Frankie’s timeless hit Goes To Hollywood, relax. Memorable and dizzying just thinking about it.
A short review (in music):
False Pretense (1988)
Another thriller, another atmosphere. But still so upset. The undisputed master of complex stories that combine psychology and bodily upheavals, David Cronenberg offers the most beautiful film of his career with faux-semblances.
Here the heroes are twins. Burwell and Elliott Mantle, star gynecologists, diligently change patients. Their little scheme takes a turn for the worse when an actress, Claire Strategist, arrives at their office. Beverly falls under his spell under her brother’s possessive gaze.
The brilliance of Faux-semblants is not just based on the impressive performance of Jeremy Irons – who embodies both roles. It’s also a sour and highly perverse film about vampire relationships—in this case, between two brothers—and madness. An even stranger fact: the story of the Mantle Brothers is inspired by a true story.
Two Jeremy Irons for the price of one, you can’t say no.
JF WOULD SHARE AN APARTMENT (1992)
It’s still a story of obsession, but you don’t see it as a repeat, quite the opposite. In the middle of a wave of erotic and domestic thrillers, JF shared an apartment. Directed by Barbet Schroeder, the film features two women in unusual roles.
The story takes place in New York. Alison, who recently broke up with her boyfriend, is looking for a roommate to share her large apartment. He meets Hedra, the perfect candidate. It is cautious, disciplined, but also very invasive, to the point of reversal.
You understand, J.F. Flat sharing can haunt you – for life! – Shared accommodation. The film spectacularly explores the theme of control, centered around a formidable antagonist played by the excellent Jennifer Jason Leigh.
