Dead in Episode 7, then brought back to life in Fast & Furious 9, Sung Kang, aka Han in the Vin Diesel saga, moves into directing. As he prepares to adapt one of the world’s greatest anime to film, Sung Kang presents his first feature film: the horror comedy Shaky Shivers.

Starring Brooke Markham, Vivi Nguyen, Jimmy Bellinger and Erin Daniels, two ice cream shop workers find themselves in an abandoned camp. The Book of Spells brings them into contact with creatures from classic fantasy films.

A tribute to eighties horror movies, Shaky Shivers uses practical effects (no computers) from ’80s movies and brings a touch of kitsch humor. A deliberate choice that can be explained by two reasons: Sung Kang’s desire to pay tribute to the makeup artists and special effects artists, and the limited budget that did not allow for quality visual effects.

In an interview with the site, SSouth China Morning PostSung Kang explains his desire to move into directing and talks about the budget difference between his film and a blockbuster like Fast X .

As a director, I can give opportunities to people who face the same challenges in Hollywood as I do. It is the return and transfer of knowledge. “

Here, the actor and director discusses the difficulties of finding non-stereotypical roles for Asian actors, explaining that since starting out, he’s avoided taking on roles that are too clichéd, like “the guy who does kung fu.” He adds: “This is wonderful Michelle Yoo won an Oscar. “As an actor, I am not satisfied”

“People think everything is rosy for me, but I haven’t landed the role of a lifetime yet. It’s like I’m on the starting line, but I can never run the full race. Yes, I’ve done big, big… budget movies, but as an actor, I’m not satisfied.”

So Sung Kang decided to go to the other side of the camera. “Good thing it wasn’t Michael Jordan. If I can coach a team and create another Jordan, that’s fine with me“, he declares.
