Animation, poetry and magic: what is Miyazaki’s cinema? Everything you need to know about the world of the director of The Boy and the Heron

The Wind Rises After ten years, Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki returns to cinema with The Boy and the Heron. At the age of 82, the Japanese maestro returns to us in better shape than ever, with a story that only he knows. The story introduces us to Mahito, an 11-year-old young boy.

After his mother disappears in a fire, he must leave Tokyo and live in the countryside in the village where he grew up. He settles with his father in an old manor located in a huge estate, where he meets a gray heron, who gradually becomes his guide and helps him make discoveries and questions in the world around him and solve the mysteries of life.

To understand Miyazaki’s questions about this feature film, it was necessary to go back and analyze other films in his career. Everything that the Japanese artist achieved led him to “The Boy and the Heron” – a work of twilight that conveys sadness.

Now 82, Miyazaki is in the twilight of his long life; Thus, he wants to ask us about the values conveyed since the first film in 1968: Horus, the Sun Prince, and their relationship.

In the video above, we discuss the work of the filmmaker, an extreme perfectionist, and the themes that are dear to his heart. Before watching The Boy and the Heron, this report will help viewers who are a little less familiar with the world of the director to form a solid opinion to better understand his cinema.

Note that The Boy and the Heron is inspired by the novel And how will you live? By Genzaburo Yoshino, dated 1937, a book once given to Hayao Miyazaki by his mother. A scene from the film shows the young hero finding this book with a note from his mother saying “Grow up Mahito”. The work tells about the emotional and philosophical development of an adult boy after the death of his father.

The video was directed, written and edited by Constance Matthews

The Boy and the Heron hits theaters on November 1st.
