Palmeiras staged a heroic comeback on Wednesday evening, against Botafogo, at the Nilton Santos. Largely dominated in the initial phase, when they lost 3-0, Abel Ferreira’s team went 4-3 and remained alive in the fight for the Brazilian championship title.
Verdão remains in second place and has three more points, reaching 57. The gap from Fogão, who remains at the top of the table, is three, with the Rio team having a game less.
In the next round, the 32nd of the tournament, Palmeiras will face Atletico-PR. The clash is scheduled for this Saturday, at 9.30pm (Brasilia time), at Arena Barueri. Allianz Parque, home of Verdão, will remain closed to host GPWeek, the festival preceding the Sao Paulo Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Botafogo has nothing less than a classic ahead of it. Glorioso will visit Vasco next Monday, starting at 7pm, in São Januário.
The game
Pushed by the fans, Botafogo started the match at full steam. After just seven minutes, the team stole the ball in midfield and launched a counterattack, which landed at the feet of Tchê Tchê, on the edge of the area. He sends it towards goal and sees the ball deflect off Zé Rafael before hitting the crossbar.
Palmeiras tried to react, but saw Glorioso continue to press until the 20th minute goal. Marçal made a beautiful pass to Victor Sá, who dribbled past the marker and returned it. Eduardo took the lead and also had a deflection on Murilo to score goals.
Even in front of the marker, Fogão continues to dominate and comes close to taking the lead in the 24th minute. Marçal receives the ball on the left, takes off at speed and hits a cross, knocking paint off the post. Shortly after, in the 29th minute, Tchê Tchê scored the team’s second goal. Victor Sá received it from Marçal and left it to the midfielder, who made a shot from distance, where he sleeps the owl: 2-0.
Disconcerted, Palmeiras had few opportunities to score, but was in danger from a free kick taken by Veiga. The number 23 shoots decisively and forces Lucas Perri to fly to save in the 34th minute. A minute later, however, Botafogo throws another bucket of cold water on Verdão.
In a manual counterattack, Tiquinho Soares received the ball quickly and hit it low. Weverton comes close to it, but drops it at the feet of Júnior Santos, who had only the task of pushing it into the empty net.
Second time
Palmeiras didn’t let itself be intimidated by Botafogo’s first-half dominance and reacted. After four minutes, boy Endrick took responsibility, took three markers and touched Lucas Perri low, reducing the score.
In the 8th minute Piquerez crosses into the area and Veiga volleys, but Perri blocks. Verdão scored the second goal through Breno Lopes, in the 14th minute, but the goal was disallowed due to the attacker’s offside. Fogão responded in the 26th minute, when Júnior Santos received the ball freely in the area and crossed towards the outside.
Two minutes later, Adryelson fouls Breno Lopes, stopping a counterattack, and ends up getting sent off, leaving Botafogo one down. Despite being at a numerical disadvantage, the team has a golden opportunity to close out the match at 37′. In a quick counterattack, Tiquinho is brought down by Rony in the area and the referee awards the penalty. However, the number 9 took a poor shot and saw the Weverton goalkeeper stretch out to save.
The effect of the missed penalty came immediately afterwards. In the 38th minute, Endrick picked up the ball on the edge of the area, moved it to his left foot and fired it into the corner, reducing the score. The white team was still looking for an equalizer and managed to leave the tie at 43. With a shot in the area, Gómez headed the ball into the center and Flaco López pushed it into the net.
And there was still time to initiate the turning point. In the 53rd minute, Veiga takes a perfect free kick to Murilo, who is alone in the area and scores the goal: 4-3 to Nilton Santos.
