Novelist, intrusive fan, snow… No, it’s not trouble! What is Polar Park on ARTE?

Do you remember the strange and poetic film Poupoupidou that was released in 2011? The story of a writer who finds inspiration when his path crosses that of a woman who believes she is the reincarnation of Marilyn Monroe. All in a unique setting: Mouthe, the coldest town in France.

If you’ve never seen it, do yourself a favor, because after 12 years, David Russo’s character, still played by Jean-Paul Ruve, returns in this series called Polar Park. This is a sequel, at least a spiritual one, in which the author – who is not quite done with the problems of inspiration – this time takes an interest in the case of murder.

Without a doubt, Gérald Hustasch-Mathew’s Polar Park is this fall’s surprise series. It is funny, surprising and very original. Please note that this is not a criminal investigation like any other: here, a serial killer turns his victims into world-famous works of art, from Vincent van Gogh to Andy Warhol.

When faced with the images of the Polar Park, the references do not go astray in our minds. We think of the Coen brothers’ Fargo, for its snowy regions and its absurd tone, but also David Lynch’s Twin Peaks for this small town, which is both disturbing and intriguing. Director and screenwriter Gérald Hustach-Mathieu chooses David Fincher’s film: “As if in seven, Morgan Freeman had Mr. Hulot as a partner.”

We tried to build a story that would keep the audience on their toes and ensure that the humor never detracted from the tension of the story.he explains to Arte. The unusual tone gradually shifts its penetration towards a more baroque world. If comedy allows me to fight against the spirit of seriousness, it does not prevent depth, on the contrary, because it originates from the details that make up our lives.“The result lived up to expectations.

Polar Park is available on arte.tv and will be broadcast on Thursday 2 November at 20:55.
