It’s never too late to get over yourself. That, in a few words, is the message delivered by Unsinkable, the biopic about professional swimmer Diana Nyadi. Two famous actors on the screen: Annette Bening – she plays the champion – and Jodie Foster, in the role of his best friend and most loyal supporter.
Why is the fate of this athlete so extraordinary? Long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad has been trying to swim the 177 kilometers – 110 miles – that separates Cuba from Florida since she was 20 years old. This crazy challenge – a record apparently – the athlete attempted five times before giving up.
Finally, at the age of 60, he decided to try his luck again. More determined than ever, Diana Nyadi joined the mission head on four years later in 2013. More than taking on a personal challenge, it was about proving to myself that age is no obstacle.
Directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vassarhel, Unsinkable remains a classic sports biopic, but the film is interested in the interpretation of its two actors, Benning and Foster, who look more natural than ever to bring to life women who cannot be abandoned. A longer option.
Unsinkable is available on Netflix.
