Marking a major step forward in its control over streaming platforms, Disney announced the purchase of the remaining part of Hulu, which until then belonged to NBC Universal, from the Comcast group. NBC’s share was 33%, purchased by Disney for approximately $8.61 billion.
“Disney expects to pay NBCU approximately $8.61 billion, representing NBCU’s percentage of the $27.5 billion minimum guaranteed value for Hulu set when the companies entered into the deal in 2019, less upfront contributions of the outstanding capital call payable by NBCU to Disney,” IL describes official announcement.
The deal
Disney CEO Bob Iger believes this streaming combination is “a logical progression” from the company’s direct-to-consumer offerings “that will provide more opportunities for advertisers while offering bundled subscribers access to more content. robust and simplified”.

Disney+ announced an ad-supported plan option in the US in December this year and now believes the strategy has been a success. The company has seen a sizable portion of new subscriptions opt for this version instead of the more expensive plan, and this number is expected to grow even more as other options undergo readjustments.
