It’s a huge bummer that Quiz Lady is coming out this Friday, November 3rd on Disney+. This American comedy was originally produced by Netflix before being handed over to SVOD giant Disney. Conceived by Jen D’Angelo, who we owe in particular to Hocus Pocus 2 (the most viewed film on the same platform), this film is an unpretentious little entertainer that focuses on its two headliners.
A rising star in American comedy for several years, rapper/actress Awkwafina plays the beloved Sandra Oh, but also opposite Will Ferrell, Holland Taylor, Tony Hale and Jason Schwartzman. The former Grey’s Anatomy star has had a string of projects in recent years. After the end of the excellent Killing Eve, it seems that he has not found something that lives up to his standards.
And let’s just say with Quiz Lady, the actress is clearly there to entertain and not to showcase her talent. His forty-year-old character is a pastiche of failed pseudo-actors who never managed to carve out a career. With her fake nails, fake eyelashes and colorful hair extensions, Sandra O is unrecognizable. But he does not forget, even in a joking tone, the campaign to condemn anti-Asian racism.
Don’t expect a comedy where you get hairy. Quiz Lady mainly talks about the family and the failed relationship between two sisters. In short, deja vu. The last quarter of the film raises the bar again and brings a bit of a cheesy side to the whole affair.
Quiz Lady, available now on Disney+.
