Brazil beats Chile on penalties to end a 36-year drought by winning gold at the Pan American Games

This Saturday, Brazil won gold at the Pan American Games by beating Chile on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Sausalito Stadium, in Santiago. The Seleção fell behind in the first half, but sought an equalizer late in the second phase and secured gold on penalties, winning 4-2, ending a 36-year drought.

With the result, Brazil wins PAN gold again for the first time since 1987 and becomes five-time champions of the tournament. Chile won silver and Mexico bronze after beating the United States.

The game

Despite reaching the decision with 100% success, the Brazilians did not make great performances and this time it was no different. The first half was characterized by little creativity and almost no attacking presence. At the other end, Chile had the upper hand and prevailed in the final minutes. After hitting the crossbar, Damián Pizarro made a nice move on the left, invaded the area and crossed for Maxi Guerrero who put the ball in the net in the 42nd minute.

In the second half, Chile controlled much of the match and came close to scoring a second goal, but slowed down in the final minutes and saw Brazil equalize with a dead ball. In the 38th minute, Matheus Nascimento prevented the ball from going out from a corner, Arthur Chaves deflected it and Ronald completed with a header to leave everything level. In the final, both teams created good chances, but they couldn’t avoid extra time.

With both teams visibly tired, the score remained unchanged. The Seleção had the best chance in the first game of extra time, but stopped in defense of Cortés. Chile also came up short and the decision went to penalties.

Penalty

On penalties, Brazil took the lead when Mycael saved Villagra’s shot, but the Chileans left everything the same with Cortés’ save from Figueiredo’s shot. Subsequently Matheus Miranda converted and Clemente Montes was expelled. In the decisive shot, goalkeeper Mycael got to the ball and converted to secure the gold.

Matheus Nascimento, Ronald, Matheus Miranda and Mycael converted for Brazil. Figueiredo wasted. On the Chilean side, Zaldivia and Fuentes converted. Villagra and Clemente Montes were wasted.
