Coach Abel Ferreira congratulated Fluminense for the Libertadores title, won this Saturday, against Boca Juniors, at the Maracanã. After Palmeiras’ 1-0 victory over Atletico-PR, at the Arena Barueri, the Portuguese wanted to praise Fernando Diniz’s team in a press conference.
The commander, who has already won the continental tournament twice, understands that the triumph of the Tricolores helps to enhance Brazilian football.
“I would like to congratulate Fluminense. It is the fifth consecutive year that a Brazilian has won. In Europe people don’t look closely at who the Brazilian champion is, they don’t know the internal competition. The fifth Brazilian champion shows what the championship is like here”, he said.
“I want to congratulate Fluminense, the players, the management and the coach. It is very difficult to win this competition. It is very positive for Brazilian football to have a champion, especially for the image of Brazilian football abroad,” he explained .
Fluminense beat Boca Juniors 2-1 in extra time. The Argentine team was responsible for Verdão’s elimination from the international competition, in the semifinals.
Away from the Libertadores, Palmeiras have focused on the Brazilian championship and are currently fighting for the title with Botafogo. The Sao Paulo team reached 59 points with tonight’s triumph. Glorioso has the same score, but remains in the lead with one more victory. Furthermore, Cariocas have two games less than San Paolo.
Alviverde returns to the pitch next Wednesday, at 9.30pm (Brasilia time), when they will visit Flamengo, for the 33rd matchday of the Brasileirão.
