The Formula 1 “circus” usually attracts thousands of people around the world and the Sao Paulo F1 GP is no different. During these days of activity at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, in Interlagos, it was possible to see up close several drivers and former drivers who have already accelerated in the category’s races.
Check out the list of five drivers who competed in F1, they are in Brazil, but have fallen into public oblivion.
1) Martin Brundle
Ayrton Senna’s rival in Formula 3, Martin Brundle did not have the same success as the Brazilian driver in F1, but he accelerated into the premier category of world motorsport from 1984 to 1996, competing in 158 GPs and achieving nine podiums.
Brundle’s best season came in 1992, the year he became Michael Schumacher’s teammate at Jordan. The Briton ended the season in sixth place and stood out in the 1992 Italian GP with a second place, also ahead of the German who completed the podium in third place.
In 1994 Brundle moved to McLaren, but the team was no longer as successful as previous years. Currently, the former driver is a presenter for Sky Sports, which holds the broadcast rights to F1 in England.
2) Emanuele Pirro
Italian Emanuelle Pirro raced 37 Formula 1 Grands Prix between 1989 and 1991 and had 20 retirements. He scored just three points in F1, two for Benetton and one for the unknown Dallara-Judd. His best result was fifth place in the 1989 Australian GP.
At the age of 61, Pirro currently leads McLaren’s new driver development program focusing on young talent. The Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto is one of the latest drivers included in this project.
3) Mick Schumacher
The best known of these drivers for his recent history in F1, Mick Schumacher is the son of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, but he was far from establishing a lasting career in the category.
Mick contested 43 GPs in F1 between 2021 and 2022, scored 12 points and his best result was sixth place in Austria with Haas, in his final year. In 2023 Mick continues as a Mercedes test driver, but is further and further away from returning to the category.
4) Ricardo Rosset
The only Brazilian on the list, Ricardo Rosset took part in 27 F1 GPs between 1996 and 1998, abandoning 16 of them. His best results were two eighth places, obtained in 1996 in Hungary with Footwork and in 1998 in Canada with Tyrrell.
Rosset’s history in national motorsport is positive. The 55-year-old former driver is a three-time Porsche Cup champion and is considered one of the most successful competitors in the championship’s history.
5) Vitantonio Liuzzi
Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi competed in 80 F1 GPs between 2005 and 2011. The driver achieved two sixth-place best results in F1, in the 2007 Chinese GP with Toro Rosso and in 2010 with Force India in the GP of South Korea.
Liuzzi was world karting champion in 2001, but his motorsport career didn’t take off as imagined. The 43-year-old former driver currently works as FIA Formula 1 commissioner.
