28.1% abstentions
According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Education, the absenteeism rate was 28.1%. The number has remained practically stable compared to the last edition, when 28.3% of those registered did not show up for the first phase of the exam.
Hit by heavy rains on Friday, the state of Sao Paulo recorded an abstention rate of 26.8%, lower than the national average. It was feared that the lack of power would affect the turnout of state candidates.
The highest abstention occurred in Amazonas, which recorded an absenteeism rate of 44%. The state is facing the largest drought in its history, which has made it difficult for residents to move around, especially in rural areas. The lowest rate was recorded in Sergipe, with 24.6% of participants absent.

Loss of test images
The image of an Enem 2023 page was leaked onto the Internet and the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep) called the Federal Police to investigate the case. The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, has ruled out the possibility of canceling the exam. According to him, the leak occurred after testing began, without any impact on performance.
According to Santana, the Federal Police carried out two investigations: one in Pernambuco, at the home of the author of the post, and another in the Federal District to investigate the leak. The perpetrator of the crime has not been revealed, but INEP excludes that the crime was committed by a public official.
In the image circulating on social media it is possible to see the editorial guidelines which, in this edition, concerned “Challenges to address the invisibility of care work carried out by women in Brazil”. Four motivational texts used as the basis for the candidates’ thesis are displayed.

Essay topic on the invisibility of women’s care work
“Challenges in addressing the invisibility of care work performed by women in Brazil.” This was the theme of the Enem 2023 essay which, according to the teachers interviewed by Terra, is “important” and proposes to “break cultural barriers”. See an example with all the requirements needed to get a score of 1,000.

Enem turns to military dictatorship again after 3 years
After three years without addressing the topic, the Enem 2023 has once again raised questions related to the military dictatorship. In recent editions, during the mandate of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), this topic had been left out, despite its constant presence in the race since 2009.
The test also raised issues relating to racism, with reference to the Fluminense fans’ chant about the “dirty mulambo”, as well as violence and the Maria da Penha Law. Also mentions for the Jetsons, Caetano Veloso, the American gymnast Simone Biles and Israel.
Some students disapproved of the long texts and mentioned their difficulties, while others highlighted and praised the essay’s theme.

Candidate caught with a knife at school
A 32-year-old candidate was arrested after being caught with a knife at the Escola Dom Bosco, in Poços de Caldas, south of Minas Gerais, and eliminated by Enem.
To the Earth, Military Police said the object was identified when the student asked to go to the bathroom. When the inspector told him that he would have to pass through the metal detector before leaving the room, the boy reported having a knife in his belt and voluntarily handed it over to the security guards.
According to the company, the Enem organization contacted the Military Police, who recorded a Detailed Occurrence Statement (TCO) for a crime of minor offensive potential and released the candidate.

At the test site, the pens are too expensive
Students who took Enem at the Universidade Paulista (Unip) in the Água Branca neighborhood of São Paulo found street vendors offering pens at prices between R$4 and R$5, three times more expensive than those normally sold in stationery shops. OR Earth was there and I learned some stories about these sellers and their sales strategies, which were partially influenced by the free distribution of this valuable item on site.
