Former president of the FPF referee commission, Ana Paula Oliveira, denies harassment of clubs and coaches by referees

OR Panel discussion The former president of the FPF (São Paulo Football Federation) Referee Commission, Ana Paula Oliveira, was present on Sunday to comment on the progress of the Brazilian championship. With around three years of experience in the role, the professional assessed Brazilian refereeing and denied that there is persecution against some coaches and teams.

“It’s not Abel, it’s not Mano, it’s not Diniz. I understand that just as club A studies club B and refereeing to do a good job, refereeing has the obligation to study team A and team B to do his job. Is this persecution? No, this is a preview of the problems,” said Ana Paula.

In the current edition of the Brasileirão, refereeing has ended up becoming one of the protagonists, due to recurring errors and controversies. The actions of the judges and VAR drew criticism from players, coaches and clubs.

Only in the last two rounds, Hulk was sent off after many complaints in the match between Atlético-MG and América-MG. Last Wednesday, SAF Botafogo owner John Textor accused CBF of corruption over their controversial actions in the defeat against Palmeiras. Flamengo executive director Bruno Spindel criticized the referee’s performance on Sunday.

For Ana Paula Oliveira this is the time to strengthen the bonds between teams and referees, who must work together to avoid problems. The former linesman also justified the judges’ action to control the matches.

“I think that now we have to live in a new era, that of dialogue. Refereeing must get closer to the clubs, it must understand the needs more and it is not about persecution. The rule is clear, if you commit an abuse, you will be punished for this, simple. A good referee solves problems, lets the problem happen, goes there and solves it. A great referee anticipates the problem, will not allow the problem to happen. Why do some Coaches abuse “Why do we allow it, because if I have a referee that doesn’t allow it and even after 15, 20 minutes they go there and give the yellow card, we won’t have problems,” he added.

The current phase of the Brazilian championship has meant that refereeing actions have gained further weight. With six rounds remaining, the title race remains open, with at least four teams in contention. Therefore, every event and decision made during the matches can have a huge influence on this final stretch.
