A (new) showdown for The Simpsons. While the series is often praised for its ability to predict current events, the animated program has also made headlines in recent years for its stereotypical voice acting, with characters of color mostly played by white voice actors.
Although casting changes were made to end the controversy, the series is still in the news, this time for one of its most famous gags. In the vast majority of episodes, Homer has made it a habit to strangle his son Bart when he acts rude.
A simple run for the authors of the series, but which is accused by child protection associations of making fun of parental abuse. The last time this gag was used was in Season 31, which aired in 2020.
Since then, the show has never allowed itself to show this type of sequence again, and a scene from the current season of The Simpsons also highlighted this change. After his new neighbor congratulates him on a manly handshake, Homer confides in his wife Marge that all these years “He paid for the drowned child”.
Before hastily adding, to avoid his wife’s wrath, don’t act like that again “times have changed”. A moment of self-deprecation tinged with a little ironic attack on the new morality of our time, this scene still proves that Homer will never strangle his son Bart again, even for laughs!
