Normal People: This Big Lie The Series Star Told To Get Her Role

It’s not uncommon for actors or actresses to lie to get a role close to their heart. The star of the Matrix saga, who starred in front of the camera of one of the world’s greatest filmmakers, or Anne Hathaway, who appeared in the credits of three Oscar-winning films, did not hesitate, for example, to take liberties with the truth and be busy.

Actor Paul Mescal is one of those stars who told a big lie to get an important role. In this case, for the 27-year-old Irishman, in Connell Waldron’s excellent series Normal People, a show released in 2020 that we highly recommend because it should blow your mind.

Adapted from Sally Rooney’s novel of the same name, Normal People, one of those series that speaks very well about mental health, follows Marianne and Connelly’s complicated relationship. A relationship spanning from their high school years in a small town in the west of Ireland to teaching at Trinity College Dublin.

Throughout the twelve episodes of the series, Connelly’s character is often seen driving a car. There’s a slight problem, Paul Mescal didn’t have a driver’s license when he auditioned for the role. His agent then came up with the idea to trick production so they wouldn’t see the job right under their noses!

Entertainment Weekly at the site’s microphonePaul Mescal says: “My agent said, ‘We’re not going to pass up this job because you can’t drive. So I’m going to tell production that you know how to drive, and between now and the shooting, you’re going to have as many lessons as possible.” The actor followed the advice, took the famous permission and managed to be in normal people as if nothing had happened!

If you liked Normal People, then I recommend you discover the TV series Conversations with Friends, based on the novel by the same author. The show is available on the myCANAL platform.
