“I am your father.”
These four words spoken by Darth Vader to Luke Skywalker at the end of The Empire Strikes Back are undoubtedly the greatest reveal of the entire Star Wars saga and one of the most famous moments of theater in film history (even if some think it was Vader’s hidden name all along). .
However, before the Sith Lord revealed the terrible truth to his son, several other characters in the trilogy knew his secret. But who were the characters who really knew and under what circumstances did they learn about Luke’s origins?
- Star Wars: Which of the 9 movies is the most fan-favorite?
Obi-Wan and Yoda
As seen in Revenge of the Sith, Episode III of the saga in which Anakin Skywalker turns to the dark side and where Padme gives birth to Luke and Leia before their deaths, Obi-Wan and Yoda (who are among the only Jedi who survived Order 66) were present to witness the birth of the twins.
The Jedi Masters, despite ensuring Luke was protected and then trained, still chose to hide the truth from him, no doubt to protect him from his father.
Collateral Organa, Owen and Beru Lars
Senator Organa from the planet Alderaan, who agreed to adopt Leia and raise her on his planet, was also at the medical center where Padme gave birth. Like Obi-Wan and Yoda, he hid the truth from his adopted daughter, no doubt to spare her the (albeit inevitable) confrontation with Darth Vader.
As for Owen and Beru Lars, Luke’s uncle and aunt, who welcomed the latter to Tatooine, they apparently learned the truth from Obi-Wan himself and kept it a secret.
R2-D2
We tend to forget it, but the little astromech droid, featured in every episode of the saga and a true living memory of the Skywalker epic, was also present at every event.
If C-3PO’s memory is erased after Episode III, R2-D2’s memory is intact. We can also wonder why he chose to keep quiet about Vader’s identity all this time, knowing that Luke and C-3PO can figure it out.
Darth Vader and Palpatine
Given the tragic circumstances in which Luke and Leia were born, their father was also unaware of their existence for many years. According to the 2015 comics, set between Episodes IV and V, it was from Boba Fett that Vader learned that he was Luke’s father (although he ignored Leia’s birth).
In the movie, The Empire Strikes Back, Palpatine seems to realize the truth before Vader reveals it to him during a private audience: “Everything leads me to believe that this boy is Anakin Skywalker’s son”The Emperor confided in him before adding: “Read your heart, Lord Vader, and you will know that it is true.”
