After directing the first two installments of the Harry Potter saga – Philosopher’s Stone in 2001, then Chamber of Secrets in 2002 – Chris Columbus decided to pass the torch.

The world of Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron (Little Princess, Y tu mamá también) quickly convinced producer David Heyman, who decided to hire him to direct the third part – Prisoner of Azkaban.

In this opus, Harry Potter enters his third year at Hogwarts School. Then he becomes the target of Sirius Black, a dangerous criminal wizard who escaped from the dark prison of Azkaban with the sole purpose of killing him…

In the lead, Alfonso Cuarón perfectly lives up to the darkness of the original novel, which ultimately breaks the familial nature of the previous episodes and sets a more mature tone for the following episodes.

On the one hand, the director develops the psychological dimension of the characters, thus providing additional depth. On the other hand, he gives a specific visual aspect to the feature film, opting for dark gray and blue tones, dramatic lighting and the play of exhausting shadows.

Additionally, the film welcomes iconic new faces: Gary Oldman, David Thewlis, Timothy Spall, Emma Thompson and the late Michael Gambon, who replaces Richard Harris as director Albus Dumbledore.

Released in 2004 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Success: $796 million worldwide for a budget of $130 million, including more than 7 million admissions in France.
